  • Because it's the right time of year...

"I now understand that in the course of an existence, friends and loves move in and out of one's life.  Often we will not know the whereabouts of those once as close to us as anything on earth, or what they are feeling or remembering.  Close relationships oscillate so between tranquility and destruction, between heat and ice, between storms of affection and deserts of fear and alienation.  Under the guise of friendship and love, words can be exploding bullets.  Old fidelities wither, and love dies as lovers go on living, in the terrible fluidity of life on this planet.  In our aching and restless hearts we are burdened by an elemental isolation.  Surely we are basically alone; we go into the darkness alone, as we came into the light alone.  We all want someone to save us from ourselves, neglecting that the savior too needs saving.

"Yet love is all-- moments come, and people, to assuage the loneliness, and even help us forget it for a time, or deny it, a few small islands of warmth and belonging to sustain us if we are lucky..."

    Taps, Willie Morris
